چکیده
Scholarship on museums situated in the People’s Republic of China privileges analysis exhibitions over visitor studies. Based author’s research reception Shanghai History Museum’s representation colonial history, this paper sheds light opportunities and difficulties working with museum audiences China. The article presents a qualitative collected data, showing how visitors personalize criticize state-sanctioned anticolonial nationalist version Shanghai’s history. It argues that studies are useful method for examining renegotiate meaning under an authoritarian regime.
